Morgan County stairs, not a welded-rail package
Hartselle sits on the same Morgan County route as Decatur. Two-story homes in town often still have builder carpet on the stair after gray oak or newer plank is down on the first floor, with a rail that feels like a later add-on. Older ranch houses more often have a shorter flight off the living room — original oak gone dull at the nosing, turned spindles, a low cap that no longer feels like a guard. Those two Hartselle stairs are not interchangeable quotes; the ranch flight is a millwork problem against plaster, and the two-story job is a leftover-builder problem against new plank.
A welding shop answers “staircase railings Hartselle” with outdoor steel. We answer it with a wood handrail, newels, and wood or matte black metal balusters on the interior stair you already walk. If the stringer is sound, the structure stays. The rail is what changes — and the treads, when they no longer match the floor.
Wood handrails and newel posts in older Hartselle houses
In-town Hartselle ranch flights are rarely square. Plaster or paneled stairwells lean. Existing newels sit where a previous carpenter left them. We recut and reset wood newels so they are plumb, then run a handrail that follows the actual pitch instead of forcing a kit onto a wall that is out. The cap is stained to the adjoining oak, which in Hartselle is often original strip that has gone gray — not a fresh builder plank.
Two-story Hartselle jobs are closer to a builder remodel: square newels, a continuous oak cap, and a landing return that meets the upstairs hall. Those houses still need the rail sampled against the floor that is already down. We do not guess a stain from a Decatur job and reuse it in Hartselle. The boards in the house decide the tone.
Wood or matte black metal balusters on a Hartselle stair
Turned wood spindles are what a lot of older Hartselle rails still have. Replacing them with clean wood balusters keeps the stair in millwork language with the oak treads. Matte black metal balusters with a wood handrail are the other Hartselle ask, usually on the two-story houses that already updated the first-floor floor. Both are interior. Neither is a steel stair.
We will not weld a commercial rail or a deck package and call it a Hartselle staircase railing. If the search that brought you here was for outdoor steel, that is a different trade. If the search was for a rail that matches the hardwood in the hall, that is the estimate we write.
Interior replacement on a stair that can stay
Rail replacement in Hartselle is usually not a full custom install. The stringer works. The layout works. The guard does not. We pull the old spindles and cap, check the newel framing, and install the new rail with virtually dustless containment because these are occupied houses. Carpeted treads can convert in the same visit. Worn oak treads can be recut and refinished so the new rail does not sit on a leftover walking surface.
Decatur is the next stop on this route. If you are between the two, say so on the form — we already drive that road. There is no public shop address. Josh Templet comes to the Hartselle house with a tape and a written estimate. Cullman is the next town south if that is the closer name; the Hartselle rail quote is still local to this opening, not a copy of a Cullman builder stair.
Handrail height in general terms — not a Hartselle code chart
Typical interior residential handrails sit about 34 to 38 inches above the nosing. Baluster spacing is set so a four-inch sphere cannot pass. Older Hartselle ranch rails are the ones that often sit low or wide of that. Two-story builder openings are usually closer. We confirm the number at the house because a short living-room flight and a two-story foyer are not the same drop.
This page does not publish a code table or a price. The written estimate is the place those details land, after we see the opening, the pitch, and the floor the cap has to meet.
Process and a free Hartselle estimate
On-site measure on the Morgan County route. Rail-only or remodel-plus-rail decided in the house. Free written estimate. Dust-contained install. Stain on your boards. Walkthrough before we leave. Hartselle jobs are scheduled on the same loop as Decatur, so a weekday visit is ordinary — not a special trip we pad onto the quote. Call (256) 665-2161.
Interior hardwood only. Licensed and fully insured. Owner-operated by Josh Templet. We do not do outdoor steel, deck rails, or commercial metal fabrication. Hartselle staircase railings, as we mean them, are the interior guard on a hardwood stair. Custom staircase installs in Hartselle happen when an addition or a ruined layout needs a new run — still oak treads and a wood or wood-and-matte-black rail, still finished to the floor, still not a welded package from a metal shop. Handrails and balusters are also available as stair parts if you are coordinating other trades.
