Athens is a color-match problem, not a welding problem
Color matching is the whole point of an Athens interior rail. Metal fabricators can weld a rail. They cannot sample stain on your oak, cut a cap to a plaster wall that leans, and make the handrail belong with the hallway plank. Older in-town Athens houses often still have original strip that has gone gray at the nosing, with turned spindles and a low cap. Newer two-story builds more often want an oak cap with matte black metal balusters on a leftover builder stair after the first-floor floor is already down.
Those two Athens stairs are not interchangeable quotes. The older flight is millwork against plaster. The newer flight is a leftover-builder problem against plank. We quote the opening in the house, not a copy of a Huntsville foyer or a Decatur two-story. Moulton sits on the same North Alabama loop if that is the closer name on the form.
Wood handrails and newels against Athens plaster
Older Athens stairwells are rarely square. Newels have to sit plumb against plaster that is not. We recut and reset wood newels, then run a handrail that follows the actual pitch instead of forcing a kit onto a wall that is out. The cap is stained to the adjoining oak — often original strip, not a fresh builder plank. Painted newels belong when the rest of the millwork is painted.
On newer Athens two-story plans the newels are usually undersized builder stock set where the framing allowed. We check those points before we commit a layout. If a newel has to move, it is on the estimate. If the posts can stay and only the cap and balusters change, we say so. You are not buying a custom stair because a metal shop only sells steel.
Wood or matte black metal balusters on an Athens stair
Wood balusters match existing millwork and are the quieter Athens ask on older interiors. Matte black metal balusters with a wood handrail are the mixed look many newer two-story homes want. Both are interior. The metal is infill. The structure you hold is wood, finished to the treads. We do not fabricate a steel staircase, a deck rail, or a commercial welded run and hang it in an Athens foyer.
We sample both against your treads under Athens light. Older houses often have warmer, more closed halls; newer two-story plans are brighter at the first floor. The black that belongs next to gray original oak is not always the black that belongs next to a gray-brown plank. The boards in the house decide.
Replacing the rail on an Athens stair that can stay
If the Athens stringer is sound, we keep it. Rail replacement does not mean tearing out a working stair. We pull the old guard, protect the floor, and install the new one with virtually dustless containment because these are lived-in houses. Carpeted treads and a new rail are one job when you want both. Rail-only is the quote when the treads already match the floor and only the spindles or skinny cap are wrong.
Worn original treads can be recut so the new handrail does not sit on a leftover nosing. That is a common in-town Athens remodel: gray oak recut, new cap, wood or mixed balusters, stain sampled on the hallway boards. Gurley and Moulton are on the same drive if you are between towns. There is no public shop address. Josh Templet comes to the Athens house.
General handrail height — written at the Athens house
As general interior residential practice, a handrail usually lands between 34 and 38 inches above the nosing, and balusters are spaced so a four-inch sphere cannot pass. Older Athens flights sometimes sit low of that. Newer two-story openings are often already close. We do not treat those as the same measure, and we do not post a code table on this page because pitch, returns, and existing newels vary by house.
Exact height, returns, and spacing go on the free written estimate after Josh sees the drop and how the rail has to meet the upstairs hall. A two-story Athens foyer is not a short ranch flight. The number is local to the opening. This page does not publish prices.
Process and a free Athens estimate
On-site measure in Limestone County. Rail-only or makeover-plus-rail decided in the house. Free written estimate before a newel is set. Dust-contained install. Stain on your boards. Walkthrough before we leave. Moulton and Gurley ride the same loop, so an Athens weekday visit is ordinary.
Interior hardwood stairs only. Licensed and fully insured. Owner-operated by Josh Templet out of Alabama Hardwood Restoration. No outdoor steel, no deck welding, no commercial metal fabrication. If you need an Athens interior staircase railing that matches the oak in the hall, call (256) 665-2161 or send the estimate form. Handrails, newels, and balusters are also available as stair parts with or without installation if you are coordinating other trades. A full custom stair is a different quote when the opening is past saving.
